There are several established ways to step off the hedonic treadmill, based on positive psychology research:
1) Compose a daily gratitude list
2) Live a purpose-driven life [see Blog post on creating a life compass]
3) Be of service to others
It appears that an additional tool, established empirically and beneficial to my practice, is:
4) Seek therapy
Researchers at the Universities of Manchester and Warwick found that people gained more happiness from psychological therapy than from money (Boyce and Wood, 2009). They studied thousands of people who'd started therapy with people who received a large pay increase. Therapy was 32 times as cost effective. More specifically, the same gain in happiness from $1300 spent on talk therapy required an annual pay raise of $42,000.
Thankfully, the solution is out there! Call me at 415-250-2290 for a free telephone consultation to determine if therapy might be right for you!
